Laryngectomy & Tracheostomy Management

Tracheostomy & Laryngectomy Emergency Box

A box with equipment to manage tracheostomy and laryngectomy emergencies is stored in the resus cupboard. This should be kept at the patient's bedside when they attend the ED, along with the appropriate bed head sign and emergency algorithm - see below. These should then follow the patient to the ward when they are admitted.

A replacement box should be obtained from Critical Care (Ward 118). If a replacement box is not available, please tell the Nurse-in-Charge AND email scott.clarke1@nhs.scot.

Education

There is a Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy site on the NHS Lothian Intranet (Direct link:
Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy or via: old intranet > directory > tracheostomy and
laryngectomy). Here you can access care checklists, view several short videos demonstrating
nursing care of the patient with either a Tracheostomy or Laryngectomy and additional
information and resources.

Further information and training videos can be found on the National Tracheostomy Safety Project website - tracheostomy.org.uk.
