Planning for Quality
Warning
Within this framework, Planning for Quality (also called Quality planning) is about planning for quality improvement at a local level to support service delivery so they meet people’s needs. Quality planning supports decisions about how to set direction and priorities for quality improvement and change.
What it focuses on
- understanding people and their needs
- supporting staff wellbeing
- building a positive culture
- using feedback and learning to guide decisions
When it happens
Quality planning takes place:
- at regular points during the year
- after adverse incidents
- through Quality of Care Reviews and local care assurance processes
- in response to new or emerging evidence
Key planning activities include:
- understanding population and community needs to inform care delivery
- using insights from reviews
- identifying gaps in care
- checking what is and is not fit for purpose
- exploring options and choosing the best approach
- planning resources and enablers needed to deliver change
When planning for change it is important to:
- start early
- understand what is working
- involve the right people
- use insight from multiple sources
- engage those receiving care
