Universal services like Health Visitors and nursery/school staff should also be able to help you to support your child or young person in the first instance. They should also know where to ask for more help if this is needed. If you have any concerns about your child or young person’s eating, drinking or swallowing please contact your Health Visitor or GP in the first instance.
You can find more information about neurodivergence on the Conditions and Differences A-Z page. Each of the pages has information about what you can do to help. Your child/young person does not need a diagnosis to access this information or other support in the local community.
Specialist Children’s Services have a number of advice lines you can call for support if you are worried about your child or young person. All of our advice lines can be busy. If you don’t get through the first time, please keep trying.
If you are concerned about your child/young person’s:
- Being able to join in with the activities they need and want to do including:
- self-care (dressing, washing, going to the toilet),
- play/leisure (Playing with toys, playing outside, doing hobbies and joining in at clubs/sports),
- work (participating in nursery and school activities, volunteering, paid work and domestic tasks (cooking, cleaning etc.)
then call your local Occupational Therapy Advice Line.
- Communication differences, including:
- understanding,
- talking,
- speech sounds,
- interaction
call your local Speech and Language Therapy Advice Line.
- Motor skills, for example:
- not achieving their motor milestones, eg rolling, sitting up, standing, walking
- walking or balance difficulties
- Some areas outside of Glasgow City may also offer advice regarding children's injuries, joints and muscle problems.
then call your local Physiotherapy Advice Line.
The neurodevelopmental advice lines are for parents and carers of children and young people who are on the waiting list for an assessment. If a parent/carer becomes concerned about an increase/change in impact they can phone their local neurodevelopmental advice line to speak to a clinician about their concerns. The clinicians will provide advice about specific supports and strategies to try. They will also signpost to supports in the family’s local area. They are not able to provide specific information about waiting lists or how long they will wait for an assessment.
