Fundamentals of Care
Warning
Why fundamentals of care matter
Changes in recent years in how healthcare is organised have sometimes reduced the focus on essential care, such as eating and drinking and personal hygiene.
When these needs are not met, it can lead to:
- reduced patient safety
- longer hospital stays
- delays or problems with treatment and care
- poorer overall outcomes
Patient surveys show mixed experiences, with many people wanting:
- more involvement in their care
- greater attention to the fundamentals of care
EiC focus on fundamentals of care
In response to the Vale of Leven Inquiry, EiC places a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of care. These are the essential needs every patient has, whatever their condition or treatment. They include consistent attention to:
- safety and comfort
- clear communication
- dignity and respect
- eating and drinking
- mobility and skin care
- personal hygiene
- privacy
- rest, sleep and pain management
All staff are expected to be alert, and to respond promptly and consistently in always meeting these needs.
