How EiC fits with other national programmes

Warning

Working together across NHS Scotland

EiC works alongside other national programmes. Together, they:

  • give assurance about the quality of care
  • help set improvement priorities across NHS Scotland

The EiC framework helps teams:

  • understand what is happening in the system
  • maintain and improve quality

EiC and the Scottish Approach to Change (SATC)

EiC aligns with the Scottish Approach to Change (SATC). SATC provides a clear and simple way to manage change. It brings together evidence‑based methods which can be used for:

  • whole‑organisation change
  • smaller improvement projects

Both EiC and SATC promote a Quality Management System approach based on planning, improving, and maintaining quality, to improve systems and redesign care.

EiC and patient safety

EiC works closely with the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP). SPSP aims to make care safer and more reliable.

The Essentials of Safe Care  resource provides practical safety guidance.

EiC and SPSP share strong links in areas such as:

  • safety
  • culture
  • leadership
  • communication and co‑ordination
  • person‑centred, people‑led care planning

EiC and safe staffing

EiC supports the Healthcare Staffing Programme (HSP). The Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act 2019 requires safe staffing levels.

EiC supports this by:

This helps Boards ensure:

  • the right number of staff
  • with the right skills
  • in the right place, at the right time

EiC and Realistic Medicine

EiC links closely with Realistic Medicine. Both focus on care that supports what matters to people, not just delivering more activity.

Realistic Medicine promotes:

  • shared decision making
  • reducing unnecessary variation
  • avoiding unnecessary treatment

EiC supports this by:

  • putting the person at the centre of care
  • providing measurement and data
  • helping teams understand systems
  • offering assurance on care quality

Together, this supports Value Based Health and Care by:

  • focusing on the best outcomes for people
  • involving patients and improving patient experience
  • making the best use of resources
